Human beings are meant for movement and physical activity to perform functions with vigor and proficiency. With society these days and advances in technology humans live more of a sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary death syndrome is a cause of this. Sedentary death syndrome is a cause of death attribute to a lack of regular physical activity. Research shows that physical inactivity and a negative lifestyle seriously threaten health and do damage to the human body. All of the world’s industrialized nations are experiencing this lack of physical inactivity. In the United States of America physical inactivity is the second greatest threat to the public health. The number one threat is tobacco use which is the largest cause of preventable death. Based on research, the average life expectancy in the United States is 78.3 years. Men's life expectancy in the United States is 75.7 years, and women is 80.8 years. Based on the World Health Organization the United States ranks 28th in the world for life expectancy. Between the years of 2000 and 2010 the male and female life expectancy has slipped down the list of the countries for life expectancy. Scientist from the National Institute of Aging predict that in the coming decades the average lifespan may decrease by as much as 5 years due to the sedentary lifestyle. The leading cause of death in the United States is largely lifestyle related. The US Surgeon General has stated that 7 out of 10 Americans die of preventable chronic diseases. Chronic diseases are illnesses that develop as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle and last a long time. 53% of all deaths in the United States are caused by cardiovascular disease and cancer, and almost 80% of the latter deaths could be prevented through a healthy lifestyle program.

A lifestyle of wellness has seven dimensions. They are social, physical, spiritual, environmental, mental, emotional, and occupational. With all the dimensions of wellness put together one can ensure a healthier and longer life. For one to live at an optimal level of wellness, health related fitness would be a key component to maintaining it. Health-related fitness relates to the ability to perform activities of daily living without undue fatigue and is conducive to a low risk of premature hypokinetic diseases.
